Soldier Tomorrow savings benefits and how it is calculated
The Soldier Tomorrow savings helps service members build a lump sum after discharge, and unlike an ordinary savings account it stacks three benefits: a preferential bank rate, tax-free interest income, and the government's 1:1 match. Because the government adds the same amount you contribute, the accumulation effect far exceeds plain interest.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Monthly deposit limit | Up to ₩550,000 self-funded |
| Government match | 1:1 (100%) of your principal |
| Interest income tax | Tax-free (exempt from the ordinary 15.4%) |
| Eligibility | Active-duty conscripts and others during service |
Bank interest here uses the savings simple-interest formula (monthly deposit × annual rate ÷ 12 × months × (months+1) ÷ 2); the government match adds 100% of your principal, and interest support is added as an estimated ratio of the bank interest. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the Soldier Tomorrow savings account?
The Soldier Tomorrow savings (Jangbyeong Naeil Junbi Jeokgeum) is a savings account that active-duty conscripts can open during service. On top of a preferential bank rate, the government matches 100% (1:1) of your deposited principal. Combined with tax exemption and interest support, it is far more favorable than an ordinary savings account.
What is the maximum monthly deposit?
As of 2025, the maximum self-funded monthly deposit is ₩550,000 (combined across banks). Depositing up to this limit increases the 1:1 government match accordingly and raises your maturity amount.
How is the government match calculated?
The government adds 100% (1:1) of the principal you deposit. For example, depositing ₩550,000/month for 18 months gives ₩9.9M of your principal plus ₩9.9M government match, for about ₩19.8M of principal alone. Bank interest and interest support are added on top.
Is this result the same as the actual amount I'll receive?
This calculator gives a reference estimate using simple interest and standard assumptions. The actual rate, preferential conditions, government match and interest support ratios, and the bank's product can change the amount, so confirm exact figures with your bank and the Ministry of National Defense.
