Conscript promotion rules and how days served are counted
A conscript becomes a Private on the enlistment day and is promoted to the next rank once the required service months in the Korean military regulations are met. Private requires 2 months, PFC 6 months, and Corporal 6 months, so the cumulative months from the enlistment date are PFC at 2 months, Corporal at 8 months, and Sergeant at 14 months.
| Rank | Promotion point (from enlistment) | Time in previous rank |
|---|---|---|
| Private | Enlistment day | - |
| Private First Class | Enlistment +2 months | 2 months as Private |
| Corporal | Enlistment +8 months | 6 months as PFC |
| Sergeant | Enlistment +14 months | 6 months as Corporal |
Days served treats the enlistment day as day 1 and counts to today. To find your discharge date and D-day, use the Discharge Date Calculator; for pay by rank, use the Military Pay Calculator.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How many months after enlistment does each promotion happen?
A conscript becomes a Private on the enlistment day. After 2 months as Private comes Private First Class, after 6 more months (8 months in) Corporal, and after 6 more months (14 months in) Sergeant. So PFC is enlistment +2 months, Corporal +8 months, Sergeant +14 months.
Does the rank change exactly on that date?
Promotions are often applied on the 1st of the month in which the required months are met, so this calculator's promotion date (enlistment date + months) may differ from your unit's date by a few days. Confirm the exact date with your unit's personnel office.
How are days served counted?
This calculator treats the enlistment day as day 1 and counts to today, as (today − enlistment date) + 1, so the enlistment day itself is 1 day.
Is this promotion schedule the same for every branch?
The required months for Private, PFC, Corporal, and Sergeant follow Korean military rules common to active-duty conscripts in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Total service length (discharge date) differs by branch, and this calculator is a reference estimate.
